Jeopardy in January

Sara Cutler loves her job as head librarian of the public library. But it's set to be torn down and the dead body she discovers in the rare books section probably won't help Sara as she tries to save the library from demolition. She's determined to find the killer. But she didn't expect Jason Rees, the big city developer who wants to get rid of her place of employment, to help her. My only complaint about this book is that there are a lot of exclamation points. Everything else was great. Three-dimensional characters. I loved the setting with the old library and the history that surrounds it and Sara's determination to save it from demolition. I thought the mystery was well-done. I felt like I was involved in the story. This was an Amazon freebie and it was actually good! I'm pleasantly surprised. I look forward to reading about these characters and what's going on in their picturesque little town. 5/5.

A Crafty Crime

Hadley James is on her way to check on a cat. But she did not except to find the cat's owner dead. This woman wasn't the nicest but who would want her dead? Hadley's twin brother, Paul, is the deputy sheriff. And Hadley, along with her best friend Suze, can't help but get involved in the case. This is an entertaining and enjoyable start to this series. I like the jam making aspect and the fact that Hadley's twin brother is the deputy sheriff. It's easy to read and everything flowed well. I look forward to reading more! 4/5.

Murder in Cherry Hills

Kat Harper has recently returned to her hometown of Cherry Hills, Washington. She notices her neighbour's cat, Matilda, in the hallway of their apartment building. The door is ajar and Kat discovers poor Mrs. Tinsdale's body. Kat and Matilda will have to work together to solve the mystery of who would want Mrs. Tinsdale dead. This was short and light. Not a whole lot of depth or action - the main character doesn't really put herself in danger, but it is a promising start to the series. Kat is a likeable character. There's also an actual cat, that's always a good thing. I look forward to reading more from the Cozy Cat Caper series. 4/5.

The Perfect Roommate

Meadow's poor and an introvert and she has found an ad looking for a roommate. She's on her way to check out the place and meet her potential new roommate, Lauren. Lauren is everything Meadow isn't - wealthy, stylish, pretty, sophisticated. But Meadow is in luck; Lauren wants her to be her roommate and also invites her into her social circle. Meadow's thinking she could get used to this, and she likes her new friend - until she catches her doing something she shouldn't be doing. This was on my wishlist for a while and I wanted it so bad and I have no idea why I never got it. I was over the moon when I found it in my daily email for book deals and it was free! I was hooked from the very first page. The writing is great and it's fun. The characters felt real, they were not without quirks. There's lots of uneasiness and tension. I could relate to Meadow more than I'd like to admit. A very entertaining page-turner. I'm sorry I didn't re...

The Secret of Seaside

Paige Comber dreams of running off to Paris to train at the Cordon Bleu, but it won't happen this summer. She's stuck running her granny's coffee shop in the small, sleepy island village of Seaside. But when a handsome stranger named Nate shows up at the shop, the summer suddenly doesn't seem so bad. Until Paige discovers Nate's uncle's body washed up on the beach and Nate is thrown in jail for the murder. Paige knows Nate didn't do it, so it's up to her to find out who did. I was browsing through my ebooks for quite a while, reading a sentence and thinking 'no this isn't what I want to read right now' when I came across this freebie I found on Amazon. I was immediately hooked. The writing was fun. I loved the setting. The characters were great. It definitely hit the spot. I was very pleasantly surprised with this gem and I'm looking forward to more! 5/5.

Invite Me In

This started off good - Annabelle Elder is an antiques dealer. She collects erotic art, but her life is the complete opposite of steamy. When she attends a New Year's Eve party at Haven Hotel with her best friend she decides to be a little more open-minded, especially when she meets handsome, rich, charming Jared Golden and discovers the pleasure palace he has set up in the hotel. Only those who've received invitations may go and nobody will spill what goes on behind closed doors. I liked the fancy hotel and waiting to see what will happen between Annabelle and Jared, who seemed to be interesting as individuals, but things became soo boring between them. It was the same thing over and over and over with one completely weird scene in the middle that had me wondering things like 'why??' and 'what the fuck???' So much heat in their eyes, their blood, their touch, their everything! To be honest I skimmed the hell out of this book after I managed to get...

Nailed

This had an interesting premise - newly single Conrad Blunt has his secretary find an escort for him to take to the charity ball.. his sister doesn't like that idea and has her best friend done up to accompany him which he doesn't know and he doesn't remember Emma anyway. But this was boring. It was repetitious. It was like the author went through the thesaurus and used weird words to describe the anticlimactic sex scene between these two. Ugh. Thank God it was short and it was free. I won't be reading more in this series or looking for more from this author. 2/5.

Explicit

Jackson Ford is a bestselling novelist. He's arrogant and relentless. And he's way behind on his latest novel. His new editor, Ellie Parker, is desperate to get some of his pages to her boss before she loses her job, but Jackson is also stubborn and won't give her what she needs - at least when it comes to his novel. I don't read a whole lot of erotica. The way the sex scenes are written usually have me rolling my eyes. But I thought this one was very well-written. There wasn't one part of this book that I did not like. Ellie was a hard worker, she was a good friend and a good daughter, she followed her heart. I loved the relationship between her and her best friends Bianca and Maggie. When Jackson wasn't being an arsehole he was a great guy! There were lots of cozy vibes - curling up by the fire, drinking tea and reading, watching the snowflakes, staying in a secluded cabin. I'm happy I read this!  5/5.

Box of Terror

Box of Terror contains four stories. The first one immediately drew me in. I liked the writing and the content was interesting - a man finds himself inside a supermarket that sells a different assortment of food than other supermarkets and it was too late to escape the second he entered the store but he will stop at nothing to return to his family. Then I found the story dragged on and I wasn't as invested as I was at the first, but overall this one was good.  The second story started off good, I liked the concept - a family has just moved to the middle of nowhere and they keep losing their power and the man stays and waits for the repairman while his wife and child go to stay with her mother before it gets dark. But then the author started to lose me with those made up words and I also found this one too long.  I did not like the third story - a man hides himself away from the world and is obsessed with numbers. In no way did this one interest me.  I did like the fourth ...

The Catacombs

Beneath the city of Paris, France, are The Catacombs - a labyrinth of crumbling tunnels filled with six million dead. A video camera that contains mysterious footage has been left behind and found by a friend of a friend. Danièle is showing the footage her friend Pascal has found to her new friend Will. She wants him to join a small group of friends exploring the Catacombs. They're going to the place where the video camera was found in hopes of finding the woman who dropped it. Will is adamant he doesn't want to go. But he changes his mind at the last minute and it could cost him his life. This one seemed almost boring. I don't know if it was because of the setting, underground and dark, that it gave off that vibe. They walk and walk through the tunnels and then towards the end everything happens, and it's a bit far-fetched. And there were lots of mistakes - the ones that stick out the most, for me, are the girls who balled their eyes out - kinda funny, kinda sad for an...

Suicide Forest

A group of friends are planning to hike Mt. Fuji but their plans are cancelled due to impending rain. They then meet an Israeli couple who were also planning to hike Mt. Fuji but are now going to go camp in Aokigahara Jukai (also known as The Suicide Forest) instead. The group of friends tag along with the Israeli couple to see if the place is really haunted. They move past the signs urging people to think of their loved ones and not to continue into the forest but their curiosity is piqued. The forest is so dense it's easy to become lost. And by morning one of them will go missing. This was well-written. It had the right amount of spookiness. The characters were three-dimensional. I enjoyed the snippets about their lives before they got caught up in the horrors of The Suicide Forest. It was easy to feel like you were there in the forest with them. I'm looking forward to book number two in World's Scariest Places!

Blackwater Lake

Matthew Stanyer's childhood was not a happy one due to his mother's compulsive hoarding. Now as an adult he's still reluctant to return to the house but his mother's dementia is getting worse. After not hearing from his father for several days after he said he'd call, Matthew goes to their house and finds a note from his father saying he and his wife can't go on this way. The police find their bodies near Blackwater Lake and their deaths are ruled a murder-suicide. Now Matthew has the daunting task of going through the mountains of his mother's hoard. He's taken back to their past - one neither parent ever spoke of - and discovers what may have started his mother's hoarding and why his father chose Blackwater Lake to end their lives. A quick read with some twists and turns.

A Sandy's Seashell Shop Christmas

This is a cozy story about a widowed woman who has been taking her three-year-old son to the beach every year instead of celebrating Christmas. It's a hard time of year for Tiff, the time of year when her husband was killed. But when an innocent flyer about a Christmas celebration at Sandy's Seashell Shop comes into their lives, Tiff realizes she isn't being fair to her son. It's here that Tiff finally finds hope for the future. Not only do you get a great read, you get a tongue twister in "Sandy's Seashell Shop" :-)

The Almost Wives Club: Kate

First novel in the series. Kate Winton-Jones is about to marry rich and handsome Edward Carnarvon III. But a curse is put on her dress at her final fitting. From there everything seems to go wrong for Kate.. or does it?  Not a bad read. It's your typical romance novel with nothing to make it really stand out. At times it was cute and cozy but other times I found things were blatantly convenient and they had me rolling my eyes. And this line stuck out for me - " Who got to be an adult and didn't even have a driver's license? " Lots of people. Don't be so ignorant.

The Copy

This is a very interesting, very readable, fast-paced novella. It's predictable but it's still fun to see what went on in between. Geoffrey Bartell's company and his marriage are both falling apart. The extremely long hours he puts in at work leaves him with no time for his wife and kids. He can't be in two places at once. Or can he? Unfortunately Bartell's answer is short-lived and he finds himself at the center of a criminal murder trial.

Hot Summer Reads: An Anthology of Erotic Stories

These short stories are very well written with the exception of Passion On the Potomac. There is nothing wrong with the story itself. I found the writing somewhat juvenile (man jam, love slime, throbber, etc.) which took away from the story. But the rest.. wow! ***** Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday - A young woman and her best friend go on a road trip down Route 66 in the very hot summer of '67. While trying to cool off in the back of a store one of the young women finds something that makes her hotter than the weather. **** Endless Summer - A guy takes the day off work and goes for a drive down memory lane. He ends up at his grandmother's old house where he and his brother used to spend several weeks of their summer vacations and unexpectedly runs into a childhood friend. (You will never forget either of their names, that's for sure.) **** The Darkness Next Door - A young man is living in a dangerous neighbourhood. He listens to the crying and screaming next door but there's not...

The Turtle Boy

Summer has just begun and eleven-year-old Timmy Quinn and his best friend Pete are looking for something to do in their small, boring town of Delaware. They go down to Myers Pond where they discover an odd looking boy sitting on the bank.  This is a really solid short story, and the first in the series about Timmy Quinn. Good writing, interesting story, never dull. I look forward to reading the next one!

Game Misconduct

After inexperienced Oriana's shitty relationship with arsehole Paul ends, she runs into the dicks of five other men.. at the same time. This whole book had me asking "why???"  Why does it go back and forth between first and last names? Who the hell is this guy again? Oh, that's right. Him. Did that grown man actually just boop this grown woman on the nose? What's the big attraction with this whiny brat? How did I finish this book? Ugh. So stupid and unrealistic.
