Caught on Camera

Rachel Lehmann is a young chambermaid who dreams of working on Hollywood film sets. She's accepted into Toronto Film School, but she needs $35,000 for tuition by the end of summer. Luckily for her there is going to be a big wedding full of famous people at the Inn she works at. She'll just take candid photos of the guests and sell them. But her idea seems even better when she's asked to fill in for a missing bridesmaid, pretending to be the bride's cousin. But she falls head over heels for Mickey McNichol, a talent agent to the stars. He also falls hard for the bride's so-called cousin. He thinks he's finally met a beautiful woman he can trust. But that trust will be broken beyond repair if Rachel sells the wedding pictures. This is a cute little romantic comedy. It has insta-love and is predictable but I found myself totally absorbed in Rachel's star-studded world. I liked all the characters and how their antics added a little drama to the weekend of the we...

The Summer We Believed

Melody and Duncan have been friends all their lives. They spend every summer vacationing with their parents at their lake houses which are side by side. While they thought this summer was going to be filled with carefree fun before they start their first year of college together, Duncan's father announces that he has been promoted and the whole family will soon be moving to Florida. Melody and Duncan won't be going to college together after all. And on top of all that, they secretly like each other. There's only one week until their lives will change drastically. It's a cute story about lifelong friends who develop feelings for each other and are starting to act on those feelings. It's a quick and easy read. It'll be interesting to read what happens next in the series!

The Night of Elisa

Elisa has just visited a beautiful and strange place called Duskland. She finds all its inhabitants interesting and falls in love with Leonhard after just a short time. She is pulled from Duskland to rejoin the living, but she is still not safe here. Her husband wants her dead and will do anything in his power to find her. With the help of new friends Elisa has the strength to fight back and in the end she must choose between living and the afterlife. The book started off slow but once it picked up it was really enjoyable. Duskland was unique and had that eerie/dreamlike quality to it. I loved the Victorian Gothic vibe throughout the whole story. The illustrations are gorgeous. The author has a great imagination!

Crossing in Time

This book is told from three different perspectives: Isabel's - a geneticist, Diego's - a software engineer, and Matt's - a physicist.  Isabel runs into Diego fifteen years after their relationship ended. Now she must travel back in time to make sure they stay together. It's the only way to save the world. After writing a review about only winning a part of the book in a giveaway instead of the whole book like I thought it would be, the author was kind enough to get in touch and send me all of book one, so a big thank you to her! I've never really read any time travel or dystopian books, but this one intrigued me. " Be prepared to encounter a finicky time machine, a mysterious seashell and a very clever dog.  The prologue drew me in. I liked Matt's perspective the most. I did like that Isabel made it to the other world. But when Isabel and Diego were together they annoyed me to no end. Despite that, though, I did enjoy the book and am curious as to what wil...

Flight 505

Billy, Al and Mickey were part of the LA music scene in the 80's with their band Vertigo. But Al and Mickey were left behind when Billy became famous. Decades later Mickey drags Al on a trip in an effort to reunite with Billy where he'll be playing his next concert and make the last dream they had as a band come true - play at Madison Square Garden together. This was a solid novella. The author created real characters and a vivid world filled with violence, drugs, hopes and broken dreams.

Sex Hell

Debbie de La Fontaine is unhappy with her sex life, so when she meets a witch who can spice up her sex life for her she reluctantly agrees to do what the witch wants her to do - give her her African Violet. The only problem is that she wanted this to work with her boyfriend. Now Debbie is destined to have amazing sex in a place called Sex Hell - a place where she can act out her fantasies no matter how absurd they are, with a "sleazy" man who is not her boyfriend. The only way she can escape Sex Hell is to keep returning there again and again until she can gather enough clues from Carl the demon - a floating head who shows up after the deed is done - to break the spell. This was original and funny. The writing was really good. I found it did drag on a bit towards the end though. I loved Debbie's sarcastic comments. This is the kind of book I wouldn't normally read but I decided to try it anyway and I'm happy I did!

Death Chase

Mira, Isabelle and Kimmy have been friends since college. And remained friends through some pretty awful times. When Mira was drinking and doing drugs, she ruined her best friends' lives. For whatever reason they have both forgiven her and staged an intervention. A year into her sobriety, Mira and her friends are running a 50K wilderness race together, a race that Mira hopes will bring them closer. As the race progresses, strange things start happening, things that seem to be related to Mira's past. With no cell phone reception Mira wonders if they will make it out alive. The chapters alternate between the past and present. I liked the idea of running a race and weird things happening. But I did not like the ending. At all. And there were quite a few spelling/editing errors which became distracting. But overall it was an enjoyable, easy read.

Dover Park

The Moreau's are well-respected members of their community. Their lives are happy and peaceful. But a mysterious visitor will change all of that. While trying to find answers for this person's sudden appearance, a decades-old drowning is looked at a little closer and will lead to shocking discoveries. This book is filled with mystery and twists. It kept me guessing until the end and I wasn't disappointed.

Sour Candy

Phil Pendelton is picking up chocolate for his girlfriend at Wal-Mart when he hears an ear-piercing scream from a little boy. He never thought that little boy would turn out to be his son. I didn't enjoy the ending as much as the rest of the story, but, as always, great imagination and great writing from KPB.

The Alchemist’s Memory

A disjointed (and sometimes confusing) story about a young woman who has just awakened from an attack and discovers she has lost her memory. She takes a trip to visit a clerical healer in hopes of getting some answers to her past and who she is. The amount of spelling errors and grammatical errors really took away from the story. Atrocious.

Boyfriend Glasses

It was love at first sight for college freshman Greta Bell when she saw her soul mate Blake Abbott at a frat party. Too bad Blake is dating her roommate.  Blake is putting Greta through a test, just like her high school sweetheart did, to find out if her love is true and the lengths she goes to to get what she wants is scary. More than once Greta made me uncomfortable. What went through that poor girl's head - wow. This book is filled with lots of twists and turns. The story flowed well, was easy to read and made you feel like you were there following Greta around (ha ha) Unputdownable!

Eleanor's Gift

Eleanor Rosette is the sole survivor of a horse and carriage accident that leaves her with mysterious marks on her neck. Not long after Lord Welton brings her into his home to recuperate strange things begin to happen. I enjoyed the author's writing as well as her gorgeous illustrations!

Hampton Road

We start off with Billy. He has no idea where he's really at or why he's being held there against his will. He's being asked by a doctor to recount details about what happened that night on Hampton Road but he just can't remember. The story goes back and forth from Billy being in his current state of having amnesia to the events that happened during the last couple of months leading up to the incident. These flashbacks are told by Billy, his girlfriend Praxy and his best friend Charlie. The first chapter was good - it was interesting and humourous. Then the book was okay - some funny lines here and there, but it was all forgettable. Going into detail about motorcycles and the races was boring and a chore to get through sometimes. I didn't like how the ending was put together.

Beasts: 16 More Weird Stories

Some of these stories were okay but I found most of them lacking and confusing.

Bleed

Miranda's wrists gush out blood. She doesn't know why or when it will happen. As if that isn't bad enough she has just enrolled at a new school which has been nicknamed "Suicide High" thanks to the increasing amount of suicides happening lately. It's here she bumps into a cute boy named Jake and learns that he has the power to predict the immediate future. Jake's friend, Sam, eats the sins of the dead. Two of their classmates also have special powers. Topher can heal by touch. Xyan can speak and understand all languages. When it becomes apparent that something or someone is behind the suicides, these five team up to destroy the evil that's running through their school. This isn't the kind of book I usually read but it sounded interesting. Definite points for originality. Xyan got on my nerves. I hate when I don't know what the characters are saying because of different languages. I didn't care for the last few chapters but overall the book ...

Kasey Screws Up The World

Kasey destroys her older sister's hip and dance career, her best friend's love life, and her own relationship with a cute boy she just met. And she abandons the dance team right before Nationals. No one will listen to her apologies so she starts a blog to tell her side of the story while also taking action to fix the lives she ruined. This book was well-written. It was never slow and boring. The story was unique and believable. I loved Kasey and Finn together.

Doctor-Patient Confidentiality: Volume One

In this short story, first in the series, we learn about Ramona "Roni" Gallo. She's a college student who is juggling two majors, has a full-time job and is worried about money. When she begins having stomach pains she thinks it's just stress. It takes a screw-up and demanding instructor for her to finally go to the clinic for a check-up.  The prologue is pretty intense. I absolutely loved it. But I didn't find the actual story had the same amount of depth - there was a different feel to the writing altogether, so the prologue was somewhat misleading. But it gives us a glimpse of what is to come! I can't wait to read more!

Wolf is still holding Lady Killane for ransom. She is locked away in a beautiful room underground where she is served three meals a day and is allowed to bathe and read. She still struggles with her feelings for Wolf but she's also thinking hard about how to escape from the den. I can't wait to find out what happens next!

A Slow Burn

The author knows how to craft her words into a really good story. Annabelle Macon returns home from New York after being fired from her job. Sheriff Jackson Storme hasn't seen Anna in a decade but the minute he lays eyes on her he knows that she's the one for him. I can't wait to read more!
